We Make a Difference: Insights on Transforming Government Contracting

VP of Government Contracting Ben Murray is a seasoned expert in government contracting with a proven track record in federal sales and team leadership. As the National Director of Federal Sales at Adorama, Ben successfully expanded sales operations and secured multi-million-dollar contracts with prominent agencies, including the IRS and the State Department. Now at Symplicity, he is focused on leveraging his extensive experience to drive growth and innovation in the government contracting sector. In this Q and A session, Ben will explore the critical role of technology in government contracts, the importance of aligning solutions with client goals, and emerging trends that are shaping the future of the industry.

Q: Ben, can you introduce yourself and give a little background on your experience in government contracting?

A: Sure! My name is Ben Murray, and I have extensive experience in the government contracting space, particularly in federal sales and managing sales lifecycles. Throughout my career, I’ve had the opportunity to lead high-performing teams and drive significant growth. For example, during my time as National Director of Federal Sales at Adorama, I took an inside sales team and grew it to include resellers, direct sales, and set-aside sales, which allowed us to significantly expand our reach and capabilities. I’ve also secured multi-million-dollar contracts with federal agencies like the IRS, State Department, Army, and Navy, just to name a few.

Prior to that, I spent time at Ricoh, where I worked in federal sales, building relationships and securing contracts with various government entities. My focus now at Symplicity is to leverage all that experience to continue driving growth and expanding our presence in the government contracting market. I’m passionate about building strong teams and delivering results for both the company and our clients.

Q: Ben, what role does technology play in the success of government contracts at Symplicity?

A: Technology plays a huge role in the success of government contracts at Symplicity. In today’s environment, agencies are looking for solutions that not only meet their current needs but are also scalable and future-proof. At Symplicity, we leverage cutting-edge technologies to deliver efficient, secure, and compliant solutions that help agencies meet their mission objectives. Whether it’s cloud communications, advanced collaboration tools, or data analytics, we focus on solutions that improve operational efficiency and streamline workflows.

Beyond just the tools, technology also enables us to be more responsive and agile in meeting government requirements. It helps us stay ahead of compliance regulations and provide seamless, real-time support to our clients. Ultimately, our goal is to be a technology partner that helps our clients modernize and achieve long-term success in their missions.

Q: Ben, how do you ensure that the solutions and services provided to government clients are aligned with their long-term strategic goals?

A: At Symplicity, we take a very collaborative approach when working with government clients to make sure that what we provide is in line with their long-term strategic goals. First, we invest time upfront in understanding their mission objectives, challenges, and what they’re aiming to achieve, both now and in the future. This helps us design solutions that aren’t just a quick fix but can grow and evolve as their needs change over time.

We also stay very focused on compliance and regulatory requirements, which are critical in government work. By making sure that our solutions are fully compliant from the start, we help agencies avoid potential roadblocks down the line. Additionally, we emphasize scalability, ensuring the technologies and services we provide can adapt to future demands, whether it’s new regulations, increased workload, or technological advancements.

Finally, we maintain ongoing communication and feedback loops with our clients. This allows us to stay aligned with their evolving goals and adjust our approach when necessary to continue providing value as their needs shift.

Q: Ben, why is it important for our company to have a dedicated Government Contracting division?

A: “Having a dedicated Government Contracting division is crucial because working with government clients comes with its own unique set of requirements, regulations, and expectations. The government contracting landscape is highly specialized—whether it’s navigating compliance, understanding the procurement process, or managing the complexity of federal, state, and local contracts. A dedicated division allows us to focus entirely on these areas, ensuring we can deliver tailored solutions that meet the strict guidelines and needs of government agencies.

It also enables us to build stronger relationships with these clients. We understand their missions and challenges, and we can position ourselves as trusted partners, helping them achieve their goals efficiently and securely. Plus, with a dedicated team, we can stay ahead of policy changes, technology trends, and evolving regulations, which is essential for long-term success in the government sector.”

Q: Ben, what emerging technologies or trends are impacting our government contracting work?

A: “There are a few key trends and technologies that are really shaping the future of government contracting. One of the biggest is cloud technology. Agencies are increasingly moving away from legacy systems and looking for cloud-based solutions that are more flexible, scalable, and secure. That shift is creating opportunities for contractors like us to offer innovative solutions that align with their modernization goals.

Another big trend is the use of artificial intelligence and automation. AI is helping agencies become more efficient by automating routine tasks and enabling better decision-making through data analysis. It’s also making cybersecurity more proactive, which is critical in today’s threat environment.

Lastly, I’m seeing a stronger push towards collaboration tools that improve communication, especially in hybrid or remote work setups, which has become more of a norm in recent years. Staying ahead of these trends allows us to deliver the kind of cutting-edge solutions that help our clients achieve their goals more effectively.”

Q: Ben, How do you see the role of the Government Contracting division evolving as government needs and technology trends change?

I see the role of our Government Contracting division becoming even more strategic as government needs and technology trends continue to evolve. As agencies increasingly prioritize modernization, cybersecurity, and cloud solutions, our division will play a key role in guiding them through this transformation. We’ll need to stay agile, continuously adopting new technologies and methodologies that align with their evolving missions.

Our focus will also shift more toward being a proactive partner—anticipating changes in regulations, policy, and technology trends—so we can provide innovative solutions that not only meet immediate needs but also future-proof their operations. As trends like AI, automation, and data analytics become more prominent, we’ll need to adapt quickly to offer cutting-edge services while maintaining compliance and security standards. Ultimately, I see our division growing into a trusted advisor role, where we’re not just fulfilling contracts, but helping government agencies achieve long-term success through technology-driven solutions.”
