Empowering Communities: Driving Impact and Innovation

The Role of Heart of West Michigan United Way

Heart of West Michigan United Way (HWMUW) has embraced technology to enhance its community impact. When Becki Postma, Chief Impact Officer, joined the organization, she noted the absence of modern technological tools. Over time, HWMUW transitioned from paper-based systems to digital solutions like Microsoft Teams and RingCentral, significantly improving efficiency and communication.

The integration of these tools has enabled the organization to streamline internal processes and better serve the community. For instance, the adoption of the Teams phone system has made it easier for team members to collaborate and respond swiftly to community needs. Technology not only aids in internal operations but also helps HWMUW gather valuable data to identify and address gaps in community services.

Key Programs Making a Difference

HWMUW runs several impactful programs that address critical community needs. One such program is 211, a helpline providing essential resources such as shelter, food, daycare, and more. With over 50,000 calls annually, 211 is a lifeline for many in the community, offering support 24/7 and helping individuals navigate complex systems.

Another vital initiative is the Family Stability Program, which focuses on eviction prevention. This program ensures that families with children have the support they need to avoid homelessness and maintain stability. Additionally, the Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program offers free tax preparation services to low-income individuals, returning millions of dollars to the community through tax credits and refunds.

The Power of Community Engagement

Community engagement is at the heart of HWMUW’s mission. During a recent episode of the Symplicity Conversations Podcast, Kevin Nelson, Director of Donor Development, emphasized the importance of involving community members in their initiatives. By partnering with local businesses, volunteers, and other nonprofits, HWMUW creates a network of support that amplifies its impact.

The organization’s volunteer center is a hub for community involvement, offering numerous opportunities for individuals to contribute their time and skills. Whether it’s packing food boxes or teaching children to read, volunteers play a crucial role in supporting HWMUW’s programs and services. This collective effort ensures that the community’s needs are met and that everyone has the opportunity to thrive.

Evolving Challenges and Innovative Solutions

As the community’s needs evolve, so do the challenges faced by HWMUW. The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the importance of being adaptable and responsive. During the pandemic, HWMUW quickly stood up a COVID vaccine hotline, managing over 250,000 calls in a short period, demonstrating their ability to mobilize resources effectively.

To continue making a significant impact, HWMUW leverages data and innovative solutions. By analyzing data from programs like 211, the organization can identify unmet needs and develop targeted initiatives to address them. This approach ensures that resources are allocated efficiently and that the most pressing issues are addressed promptly.

Heart of West Michigan United Way’s commitment to leveraging technology and fostering community engagement has enabled them to make a lasting local impact. Through programs like 211, Family Stability, and VITA, and by continuously evolving to meet new challenges, HWMUW exemplifies how a nonprofit can drive meaningful change in the community.
